Selection methods



  • Right click on the picture of your choice. It will give you a whole bunch of options, click “edit in” and that will give you several options. Click on the one that says “edit in photoshop”. When the “edit” thing pops up click “edit a copy with lightroom adjustment”. That will take you into photoshop.
  • When photoshop opens the first thing you’re going to do is go to the right side of the screen and go to the box that says “layers”. There will be a small thumbnail with the picture you chose before hand on it. Right click on the “background”. From there click on “Duplicate layer”. This will be your background copy.  



Go to the channels find the most contrast with the subject

Drag the blue copy and make another blue layer mask

Get the background to contrast with the subject as much as possible

Click on the doge and burn tool we don’t usually use this but it’s going to help us make it more define. As i click over ut i can paint right up to the edge but i’m trying to make this nice bright subject with the doge and burn tool i can darken the dark parts even more. Paint with black over light areas. Go back into b for brush and paint over the subject it doesn’t have to be perfect once you get it close go back to the dodge tool and hit around the edges this only works when you have a very high contrast subject. What do the layer masks look like they ended up in black in white grey has lower opacity hold down command and click on blue copy and it click inverse and go to rgb and go to layers but you can’t see it because you have a layer masks bc we did a layer mask we can go back and re edit the subject we paint with white to add and black to to go away. I like to paint over and then paint back on the curve if you put a background…

With the background you can easily see what mistakes you did and you can go back on your layer mask and fix it. If you hold shift on your brush and where you want to go it will make a straight line. Next way to select is to the quick selection tool or the wand. Make the brush as big as you can in the selection and copy the subject. Because there is a plus area in the tool selection will be added to the subject hold down option to take away from the selection. The more you use the selection the smarter it gets. When it struggles because there isn’t much contrast. The next step is to refine edge. It’s in select and then down to select edge. If you want to put the subject to a lighter background click on view mode. If you increase the radius mode it will cover the subject. Refine radius tool. It will try and refined the selected area. The smart radius click it to see if it makes it better if it does not uncheck it spacebar will put you back to the hand too. Command z restores it back to where it was. There are ways to refine it even more. If you choose smooth it helps smooth the picture. Feather blurs the edges. Contrast makes a strong lines. Shifting edge pulls the selection closer to the subject. output can decontaminate colors and it will deselection

Remember settings is helpful when doing over and over again. Next label this one quick selection (the first one) the combination method is the best method for this.  The tree and a half method. We have the rectangular tools so you have a rectangle. If you want to make a perfect square push shift. Elliptical mark key tool makes a perfect circle

If you hold a space bar it will hold the selection while you’re moving it. Feather your selection most of the time. Next selection method is lasso tool. It super fast at selecting certain areas if you need to do a file with  a lot of layers you can give you a basic copy of it so you save space. Now you have the poly… ot makes straight lines to cut out. This tool selected makes it really easy to paint back. Magnetic lasso tool it uses the contrast to make a selection. If you go slightly off or out it doesn’t really do much to the picture. The professional choice for the methods is the pen tool. It is the best way to select a object. selection , can have feather make sure it doesn’t have the stair step effect. The pathtool is a key selection.
